The Pentagram

The pentagram is by far the most notable symbol of the Witch religion and lays the foundation of our belief system, but, it is much more than a symbol, it is a very powerful tool and represents the totality of all that exist in the realm of the universe, as it represents spirit, the essence of man and woman in the universe, along with earth, air, fire and water, the elements which are a sacred part of life, earth represents the physical body, the mass, air represents the breath of life that we intake from the very moment that we are born unto our birth Mother, the surrogate for the Goddess who is our true Mother, our birth Mother plays a very important role, as she is the true embodiment of the feminine principal which is held in the highest of regard and very close to the Witch’s heart, our birth Mother is one of the first teachers that we meet as we enter into the realm of the physical plane, our spirit learns from her from the very moment of conception, our birth Mother in no doubt plays a very important role in the way that we will come to relate to those around us as we grow spiritually, her influence on our spirit is present long before we draw in our first breath of life that will shape us as we grow, she is the representation and manifestation of the Goddess on earth, and even her flaws represent the various degree of the Great Mother’s personality, where there is light, dark must also coexist, for one without the other would perish and cease to exist, and a Witch must not live in the totality of light, but must instead strike a balance between the two, for if you fail to acknowledge the sum total of the all, the darkness will seek to consume you and will darken your light and dampen your spirit, when a Witch lives in harmony and balance within the realm of spirit all things are thereby made possible and nothing is absent from the Witch’s need, for all things can be found within.

The element of Air is the breath of life that fills our body and our lungs as our spirit enters the Earth plane through the Eastern portal. Air is a male mystery and the element is represented by the Sylphs, which can be seen floating on the winds of change. The Eagle is one of my favorite Air familiars, many visions have come to me seen through the eyes of the Eagle.

The element of Fire warms our heart and empowers our spirit, the flame consumes sadness and sickness, within the flickering light many tales are told, stories of long and old are handed down and mysteries are revealed, Fire is a masculine element and represents the male principal, the next time that you have the opportunity to gather around a bonfire or perhaps the campfire take a few moments and gaze into the flames, you might just be surprised by what you see, for the Salamander can be seen frolicking in the Fires flame.

The element of Water is a feminine mystery, Water rules our emotions and represents our feelings, Water makes up about 80% of our body mass, and is a necessary element that is pertinent to our survival, without Water we would literally dry up and blow away. The Moon pulls on the tide and most certainly influences our emotional state and well being, if you have ever been around a nursing home during a Full Moon you will in no doubt understand what I am talking about, for the residents tend to get wild and a little funky during a Full Moon, the Undine represents the spirit of the Water and is revealed to us through many stories and fables, who ever said fairy tales were untrue definitely lacks the ability of foresight! Just as Water fills our Mother’s womb, when we our Spirit flees upon the death of our physical host we sail back unto the West, when we are born our Spirit enters this world from the East and upon death exits in the West.

The element of Earth is also feminine and represents the massive body of our Mother, the Goddess, North is the land of mystery and the Gnome is the spirit of the land, which can be seen upon full Moon night frolicking in the groves and standing at the foothills of the Mountains.

The elements are so much more than just words, the elements represent the human need to grow spiritually and to interact with one another, within the elements all that we need to sustain life can be found, it is through the process of studying the pentagram and opening our minds and heart to the lessons contained within that, a Witch truly evolves, it is the totality of the center that makes up the whole, for the circle of light to be complete all of the elements combined with spirit must be present, a Witch does not believe that we are separate from our creator, a Witch does not bow the head or bend the knee before his Gods, for in the realm of spirit we stand as one with our Goddess and as a sign of our allegiance to her we stand before her face to face and eye to eye, of course in the spiritual sense.

The elements play a major role in influencing the Witch’s life, for instance money is ruled by the realm of earth, our emotions (love) are ruled by water, the flame of fire warms our home and aids in the healing process, and of course air rules our mind and effects our intellect, air is also a major contributor to all Psychic Work, when the principles of the elements are combined with the principles of the pentagram, a mystery unto itself is born upon the Universe, the lessons contained there within are limitless and will reveal themselves as deemed appropriate in time.

The pentagram offers a sense of peace and harmony to the Witch and is one of our most sacred and certainly one of our strongest symbols of protection, my Grandfather was an old pagan man, and he carried with him in a sachet a bear claw, an eagle feather, a silver pentagram and a moon stone, which are all very powerful symbols that offer variations of protective properties. A pentagram is to a Witch, what a Christian’s cross will never be, for life to us is held in high regard, and no human or animal sacrifice is necessary in order for us to evolve.

Open your mind and your heart, learn your lessons and cast your spells, for magic that is born out of love will only bring about love on the winds of change. Magic born in the dark chambers of the heart will only bring misery and regret, for dark magic is a power that no man is prepared to master, for black magic knows only one master and it is the imminent ruler of it’s domain, fall not in the trap of darkness, seek the light and the light shall abound and your love shall once again be renewed and your spirit enlightened, fly freely upon the winds of change, bask in the warm glow of the fire, bathe in the sacred spirit water and prosper in the bounty of the harvest and receive the true blessings of th earth, for all things are made possible within the elements of life, go forth and fear not, for no man shall harm thee, for you are a child of the Goddess and as her child, she has sworn to protect thee!

Blessed be
